A mental health charity and busy hospital ward are among a handful of organisations to have been recognised for the exemplary support that they provide to unpaid carers with a new Carer Friendly accreditation award.

The Elizabeth Ward, located in St David’s Hospital, Cardiff, specialises in rehabilitation which includes setting up care packages for patients when they’re able to return home.

The Ward, alongside a select few others in the Cardiff & Vale area, achieved the silver level of the Carer Friendly accreditation scheme.

Carer Friendly aims to recognize, improve and increase access to information and support for carers in Wales. Services go through a number of steps to secure accreditation before submitting a final portfolio of work to a dedicated carers' panel for assessment.

Zara Jenkins, Ward Sister, spoke on behalf of the team:

“We on Elizabeth Ward acknowledge that carers play such a vital role when helping us to care for our patients. They are after all the person who knows them best. They enable us to do our job better and for that we are grateful. We are incredibly proud of all the staff on the ward for working together to achieve this award.”

Sian Salkeld, Carer Friendly Manager, said:

“There is some excellent work to support carers going on across Cardiff and the Vale and we're so pleased to be able to give this recognition to these services who are going above and beyond to support the carers that interact with their service.”
