Carers Trust South East Wales, in partnership with its own Cardiff and Vale Carers Gateway team, has relaunched a free and confidential counselling service for unpaid carers in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The service, which achieved success following its initial inception, is for people who care for someone with late-life dementia or depression.

Blayne Wherrett, lead counsellor of the service, expressed his excitement about the launch:

“Counselling is about enabling you to express your thoughts and feelings about the issue that confronts you, in a safe and confidential environment. By doing this it will help you explore the options open to you and help you move forward. It is not about giving advice but guidance. We all face challenging situations in our daily lives that cause us to feel angry, sad and overwhelmed. Counselling allows you to understand, manage and cope with those feelings in everyday life.

We understand that caring for someone can be challenging and you may be faced with new situations within your caring role which may have an impact on your mental health. We as a counselling service are here to listen and to support you.

Covid-19 has had a massive impact on us all, we understand that the caring role through this time has been extremely isolating, due to having to shield from close family and friends for an extended period of time. We understand the importance of being listened to, being able to offload our thoughts and feelings in a safe environment. We as a service are passionate about supporting carers and understand that through this difficult time it is needed more than ever.”

Due to the current climate regarding Covid-19, the team will be offering telephone counselling and hope to offer face to face counselling in the near future when it is safe to do so.
