A group of intrepid young carers from Monmouthshire climbed south Wales’ highest peak at the end of July to raise vital funds for a trip abroad.

The group of teenagers – who all have significant caring responsibilities at home – decided they wanted to climb Pen y Fan mountain in the Brecon Beacons National Park to raise money for a much deserved holiday. Many of the group have not had the chance to take a holiday in many years and some have never been abroad. Young people with a caring responsibility often miss out on the things most people their age take for granted – from socialising with friends to attending school every day.

Connor, Robert, Codie, Oisin, Hannah and Jay are all part of the Carers Trust South East Wales Young Carers Forum, a group of young carers living in Monmouthshire who help shape, influence and feedback on services for young carers in Wales. The young carers’ service has been running in Monmouthshire for 17 years and supports young people aged 8-18 with a caring responsibility for someone – this could be a family member or friend who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol.

Carers Trust South East Wales Young Carers Support Officer Arif Hussain said: “This group of dedicated and committed young people have absolutely earned a holiday! They’ve done so much over the years, from helping to develop Monmouthshire’s first Young Carers Strategy to meeting with ministers at the Senedd and organising activities for young carers across the region.

“With many of them coming towards the end of their time with the young carers service, it’d be great to see them achieve their goal of raising enough money for a memorable holiday abroad.”

Cllr Penny Jones, Cabinet Member for Social Care, Safeguarding and Health said: “We have some wonderful young carers in Monmouthshire who are caring for others every day. These amazing young people often don’t realise that they are caring for someone else because it is part of their everyday life.

"Monmouthshire County Council has worked with young carers and Carers Trust South East Wales to develop a strategy for young people based on their ideas. Our partnership with Carers Trust South East Wales demonstrates the benefit of everyone working together to benefit young carers and the people who they are caring for every day in Monmouthshire.”
